El propósito de la elaboración de esta guía fue reorientar la enseñanza de la pronunciación hacia un conocimiento y uso práctico, organizado y consciente de los sonidos del inglés. Para cumplir con este objetivo la guía ha sido dividida en tres partes. La primera parte es una introducción teórica sobre los aspectos básicos de la Fonética y la Fonología a fin de prepararlos en temas relacionados con la pronunciación de los sonidos del habla inglesa, que son importantes para aplicarlos en el aprendizaje. En esta parte se inicia el proceso de concientización sobre la adquisición de una pronunciación correcta de los sonidos para sostener una conversación inteligible. Luego, se presenta el conocimiento teórico-práctico de los sonidos y su descripción fonémica y fonética. La etapa práctica de los sonidos se realiza a través de palabras, frases y oraciones. Asimismo, se incluyen ejercicios de pronunciación significativos, específicos y calificados de acuerdo a las necesidades y dificultades de los estudiantes a fin de facilitar un aprendizaje fácil, claro y adecuado. Las respuestas claves de las prácticas, las autoevaluaciones que realizan los estudiantes y un glosario de términos básicos referidos a la enseñanza de la pronunciación son presentados en el texto. Todo esto permitirá que los estudiantes se familiaricen con los sonidos del inglés americano y, no solamente desarrollarán una comunicación fluida sino también adquirirán conciencia fonológica.
